Dorothy Height, Godmother of the Civil Right Movement, Dies (1912-2010)

Dorothy Height, a leader of the African-American and women’s rights movements who was considered both the grande dame of the civil rights era and its unsung heroine, died on April 20th in Washington. Height was the President of the National Council of Negro Women for forty years. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994, and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. She was 98.
